Plaza de la Independencia

San Sebastián square, where Loja gathered on 18 November 1820: colonial houses and a 32-metre clock tower.

Also known as San Sebastián square, this is where the people of Loja gathered on 18 November 1820, the date of the city’s independence. In the middle rises a 32-metre clock tower with four faces and bronze reliefs telling the city’s history.

On the south side stands San Sebastián church; the present building dates from 1900. Its colonial buildings and clock tower make it a meeting point steeped in history.

From one of its corners starts Lourdes street, the most picturesque in the city.
