A system of páramo lakes at the heart of Podocarpus National Park, recognised as a Ramsar site.
The Lagunas del Compadre are a group of high-mountain lakes, at an average altitude of about 3,300 metres, protected as a wetland of international importance (Ramsar site) within Podocarpus National Park.
They are reached from the Cajanuma ranger station after about 15 km of demanding hiking: a two-day trek that requires a park permit and a guide. For experienced hikers, it is one of the most impressive landscapes in southern Ecuador.
